My Visit To A Local Botanica

Below are some photos of a local botanica I visited this past weekend. I ended up buying a St. Peter statue from this place. As you can tell from the photos Santa Muerte is quite popular where I live. While I was there taking pictures an older gentleman was praying at the altar of Santa Muerte (the one with the biggest, gold statue). I didn't take a picture of him for privacy reasons, but I sensed his strong devotion to Santa Muerte and I sensed that he credited her with the saving of his life. I love visiting botanicas and occult/metaphysical shops. I will probably post more blog entries and photos on other shops in my area.

Fear Gorta & Fear Gortach

Both Fear Gorta & Fear Gortach may derive from a common legend or source.

1.) Fear Gorta, a.k.a. The Hungry Man, The Man of Famine, is a fairy or spirit found in the folklore of Ireland.

Appearance: The Fear Gorta appears as an emaciated and gaunt man, with hollow cheeks, sunken eyes, and dressed in rags. Fear Gorta may have the appearance of a walking corpse.

Lore: The Fear Gorta travels the land and knocks on doors and approaches people and asks for food and money. Those who freely give are rewarded with prosperity. Those who refuse to give or who abuse him are severely punished with poverty and famine.

Powers: The Fear Gorta can bless or curse, depending on how he is treated by people. Additionally, the presence of the Fear Gorta is an omen of approaching famine.

Derfense Against Fear Gorta: Show kindness to those in need. Those who are cursed by the Fear Gorta deserve their fate for Fear Gorta does not curse the innocent or kind-hearted.


2.) Fear Gortach, a.k.a. Hungry Grass, Fairy Grass, is a small patch of cursed grass.

Appearance: Some claim that hungry grass appears as normal grass. Others claim that it appears as a clump or patch of dead grass.

Lore: There are two folk tales on the origin of hungry grass. The first legend states that hungry grass is created when a corpse is set down on the ground prior to burial. The second legend is that the grass has been enchanted or cursed by fairies.

Powers: Anyone who steps on a patch of hungry grass will begin to feel as if they are starving to death. An insatiable hunger will develop and if the person does not receive treatment they will soon die, usually by overeating.

Defense Against Hungry Grass: Sprinkling bread crumbs on a patch of hungry grass will reverse it's curse. Salting and/or burning the grass may also destroy it's evil influence.

Book Review: The ABC Of Charms

The book is, The ABC Of Charms: A Revised And Expanded Edition by Elizabeth Pepper.

This book was written by Elizabeth Pepper, a founding editor of The Witch's Almanac.

This book is filled with lore of many various herbs, stones, amulets, talismans, and other objects. The book is a lite read and keeps the reader's attention. The only main problems I have with the book is that some of the information is incorrect. For example, under John the Conqueror Root, Pepper claims that one should not use Jalap Root and that the real John the Conqueror Root is the sweet potato. Sorry but the sweet potato is far to large to use as a whole John the Conqueror root and Jalap Root has been used as John the Conqueror Root for some time now. Under lodestone, Pepper claims that lodestones are placed in water. Lodestones are made of iron and will rust if this is done. Instead, lodestones are fed with whisky or other strong alcohol. If the reader can get past the incorrect information presented in the book it will help create a better or more enjoyable reading experience.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest, I give this book a 5.

Book Review -The Mystery Library: Voodoo

The book is, The Mystery Library: Voodoo by Stuart A. Kallen.

I reserved this book at the library without realizing it was geared toward younger readers. I decided to read it anyway. I can say it is a very good introduction to Voodou and covers the religion found in Africa, in Haiti, and in New Orleans. The book also touches on hoodoo; however it presents hoodoo in a semi-schizophrenic fashion by having hoodoo be part of Voodou in certain sections and then a separate practice or a tradition of magic that has been stripped of it's "Voodou religion". Of course both forms of presentation of hoodoo in the book are incorrect. I believe this was done because the author did not realize that "conjure" and "rootwork" were synonyms for hoodoo. I believe the author confused "conjure" and "root doctor" with a practitioner of Voodou. Despite the inaccuracies on hoodoo the book is a good, basic introduction to Voodou. The only things about the book that I dislike is that the book is only circa 100 pages and all the photographs are in black and white. Some of the photographs are good and would have had even a greater impact on the reader if colored photographs were used.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest, I give this book a 5.

The Deep Dark Secrets Of Modern Witchcraft

I've been quiet for years on this out of the fear of not wanting to step on any one's toes. However, now it's time to come forward and reveal a deep dark secret about modern witchcraft that most people have no clue concerning.

When I write "modern witchcraft" I am referring to two groups of people, Wiccans and so-called "Traditional Witches". So what is the deep dark secret? The deep dark secret they don't want you to know is that both Wicca and "Traditional Witchcraft" are based on lies. For the purpose of this blog entry let me state that the term "Traditional Witchcraft" refers to people who claim to be witches and who claim to follow a certain non-Wiccan tradition of Witchcraft. Traditional Witches tend to subscribe to the same false beliefs as Wiccans with regard to a made-up history of their alleged religion.

1.) Witchcraft is "The Old Religion".

The lie of witchcraft being the old religion stems directly from the work of Margaret Murray who proposed that witchcraft was a pagan cult that worshipped the goddess Diana and her male consort Dianus (Janus). Murray claimed this cult survived the coming of Christianity and that it was the popular religion of the masses that went underground. What proof did Murray have that her theories were correct? The answer is of course none, and hence it is simply something she invented in her mind and claimed represented reality. She would not be the last to do this.

2.) Witchcraft is a peaceful, earth-based religion that seeks harmony with Christianity and other religions.

The sad truth is that the people who created the lie of Wicca and "Traditional Witchcraft" were fervently anti-Christian. People like Margaret Murray, Charles Leland, Gerald Gardner, and Alex Sanders were deeply opposed to Christianity. These people are the founders of Wicca and "Traditional Witchcraft" and their form of witchcraft was nothing like the new-age mess that Wicca and Traditional Witchcraft has now become. Wicca and Traditional Witchcraft originated with "Christian-Haters" who wanted to form their own religions and who were, in my opinion, motivated out of a spirit of rebellion and attention-seeking.

3.) Witchcraft has nothing to do with Satanism.

This is one of the biggest lies told about Wicca and Traditional Witchcraft. The founding fathers and mothers of Wicca and Witchcraft were highly opposed to Christianity. Charles Leland even invented a reversal or mockery of Christianity by inventing an antichrist figure he named "Aradia", a witch messiah who incarnated into the world to save witches in a mockery of Christian beliefs concerning Jesus. If that's not bad enough, Leland also claimed that the male god worshipped by witches was none other than Lucifer. This notion of Wicca and Traditional Witchcraft being completely separate from Satanism is simply not true. Many big names in Wicca also dabbled in Satanism. Up through the 70s it was a common reported belief among Wiccans and Traditional Witches that Satan was in fact Pan and there was no stigma for Wiccans or Traditional Witchcraft to use images of Satan in their worship. Many Wiccan and Traditional Witch covens even went as far as performing their ceremonies in churches, church cemeteries, or the ruins of churches. Again, this stems from a mockery of Christianity, which is at the very core of Satanism. The Wiccan and Witchcraft of the past decades was nothing like the light, fluffy, new-age nonsense that is presented today.

4.) Aradia is a real goddess.

I touched on this in number 3 above. There is absolutely no evidence that there was ever a goddess named Aradia. All the available evidence suggests that Charles Leland simply invented Aradia and turned her into an antichrist figure due to his hatred of Christianity. Individuals like Gerald Gardner and Alex Sanders went on to steal Aradia and incorporate her into their own systems of Wicca and Witchcraft. What does this tell us? Well, it's a huge hint that both Gardner's and Sander's tradition are likewise b.s.

5.) Wicca and Traditional Witchcraft are systems of "white magic".

Another big lie. The founders of Wicca and Traditional Witchcraft performed curses, even death work on their enemies. Not only did they hex people but most of them experimented with drugs, held orgies, and claimed to have gone through initiation rites the involved incest, forced sex, sex with minors, bloodletting and sometimes animal sacrifice.

6.) The people put to death in Salem were Wiccans or Witches.

Another whopper of a lie. The people executed in Salem were Christians. Tituba may have been the closest thing to a witch there but what she did definitely did not involve the goddess Diana or anything close to Wicca or Traditional Witchcraft.

7.) Millions of Wiccans or Witches were executed during "The Burning Times".

The figure was closer to circa a hundred thousand, possibly going as high at a few hundred thousand, but no where near millions of people. Second, the people executed were Christians, not Wiccans. There is no actual evidence that the people who were executed were pagans.

8.) "I come from a long line of witches"

Lie. Falsehood. However you want to call it is untrue. This saying has been popular for decades and not one single person who claims such has ever been able to back up the statement with proof. Usually when people say this they are falsely identifying folk magic practices as being Wicca and Traditional Witchcraft. If you go back far enough pretty much all families will have a history of folk magic practices. But folk magic practices is not the same thing as Wicca or Traditional Witchcraft.

9.) Hecate as a beautiful maiden or as a crone.

Wiccans and Traditional Witches like to portray Hecate as either a beautiful, fairy-like maiden or else as a loving, grandmotherly figure. It's a lie. Before the rise of Christianity Hecate was viewed as a bogeyman-type figure and was equated with monsters and demons. During the time of the Roman empire and once again before the rise of Christianity, Hecate was viewed as a hideous being with snakes for hair, who had a triple-body, and who drank blood and haunted crossroads and cemeteries on nights of the dark of the moon. Hecate was also the mother of various demons, such as the empusa, which were a type of vampires. The Wiccan and Traditional Witchcraft view of Hecate is not and has never been rooted in any actual historic representation of the goddess.

10.) "I'm a solitary, eclectic Wiccan/Witch"

No such thing. The founders of Wicca never intended it to be a religion for the masses. You cannot be a Wiccan until you are initiated and you cannot initiate yourself. Also, the founders of Wicca and Traditional Witchcraft never intended for the religion to be a "free for all" where you can do whatever you want to do and slap a Wiccan label on it. Most Wiccans tend to be the 'out of the closet' variety and don't even know that according to the rules of Wicca nobody is supposed to admit to being a Wiccan! If you are a true Wiccan you are supposed to deny being one!

11.) The upside-down pentacle, a.k.a. pentagram, is not used in Wicca.

The reversed or upside-down pentacle is indeed used in the second degree of Wicca. The people who claim the upside-down pentacle is not used tend to be the so-called solitary Wiccans who have not been initiated and know very little about actual Wicca.

12.) Wicca is thousands of years old.

Similar to the lie of "The Old Religion", Wicca is not thousands of years old. Wicca is only circa 62 years-old, from it's founding in the early 1950s.

13.) The ancients worshipped an all-powerful Mother Goddess and her male consort, the Horned God.

This is simply not true and there is no actual evidence indicating this was ever a reality. Instead, what has occurred is that certain archaeological evidence has been distorted by Wiccans and Traditional Witches. This belief also stems from certain Freemasons who were Luciferians (worshippers of Lucifer, though may be only in a philosophical manner) and who viewed Lucifer as having both a male and a female aspect. The Freemasonry link to Wicca and Traditional Witchcraft has been ignored by many and is practically unknown among actual Wiccans and Traditional Witches who know little to nothing about the origins of their faith. The core of Wicca and Traditional Witchcraft is Freemasonry, Ceremonial Magic, the teachings of Aleister Crowley, and a tad bit of folk magic thrown in. Most of the magic practiced by Wiccans and members of Traditional Witchcraft has been stolen from other, older traditions. Wicca and Traditional Witchcraft has absolutley nothing in common with the pagan religions of the past, save for the use of the same name for divinities.

14.) Wicca means "wise one".

This false notion came about probably by the false equating of the word witch with the word wizard. Wizard means "wise one". We honestly do not know the original meaning of the word witch. Some speculate that it means "to bend", with it being the root word for other words like "wicker"; however, no one knows for sure. Anytime you hear a Wiccan claim that they practice "the craft of the wise", you can be assured they are mistaken.

15.) Sex plays no part in Wiccan initiations or rituals.

Not true. In past decades initiation involved sex, a.k.a. "the great rite". In many actual covens sexual intercourse is still a requirment for inititiation.
Now for the truth.

The closest thing to true witchcraft is folk magic practices from various cultures. The problem is that these practitioners were Christian, yes Christian! Or should I state Christian with regard to the U.S. and European traditions. Murray, Leland, Gardner and Sanders want to pull the wool over your eyes and have you believe that witchcraft is linked to Western paganism. Not true. Witchcraft is a craft. It's an art, a skill, a trade, a practice. Practitioners of folk magic have been Christians for a couple thousands years now and the sad truth is there is no underground survival of Western paganism. These were just the lies of these people who sought fame and fortune and who held a deep hatred for Christianity. Don't be deceived. It's time for the truth to be made known. Wicca and Traditional Witchcraft is founded on lies.

I have a message on the sidebar of my blog asking for people to contact me with regard to being interviewed. Unfortunately, I am being overwhelmed with responses by Wiccans. I have already done a couple of interviews with Wiccans and quite frankly, I'm not interested in any further interviews with Wiccans. I'm still interested in interviewing witches, just not Wiccans. For me, witchcraft is not a religion and will never be a religion. It's a 'craft', an art or skill, a practice. I'm just not really interested in hearing from a Wiccan spout off about their spiritual beliefs. I don't mean to be rude, but 90% of the emails I get on interview requests are from Wiccans and I would like to cut that number down. I can't continue to do multiple interviews where Wiccans repeat the same thing over and over again. So since I have already represented the Wiccan side in past interviews I will now cease any further interviews with Wiccans.

Also, other than Wiccans, the second group that I get the most responses from are from self-styled werewolves. I've likewise done a few interviews with self-styled werewolves. If you are a self-styled werewolf then your story needs to be very unique or interesting or otherwise I would not be interested in performing any further interviews with werewolves.

What I am interested in are self-styled vampires of all types, "otherkin", Voodooists, Santeria folks, and the like. I just can't believe I haven't had one email from a self-styled vampire! Its always either a Wiccan or a Werewolf. LOL

Book Review: The Voodoo Hoodoo Spell Book

The book is, The Voodoo Hoodoo Spellbook by Denise Alvarado.

This is a book that is allegedly written from first-hand knowledge and experience in the tradition of "Voodoo Hoodoo". Ironically almost everything in the book can be found online or in easily obtainable books. Very little information in this book seems to actually originate with any person-to-person teachings the author claimed to have received. This would not be a problem had the author not repeat her claim that the book is filled with the teachings she grew up with. How can that be when she references so many source books and when much of the content seems to have been pulled from the Lucky Mojo website?

I will be honest. One of the biggest problems I have with this book is the author's seemingly made-up claim of a tradition of "Voodoo Hoodoo". There is no such thing. What the author is referring to is in fact called New Orleans Voodoo or Louisiana Voodoo. There is no need to invent a new name for a tradition that already has one. One of the reasons why this false notion of "Voodoo Hoodoo" is such a sore topic for me is because I had an unfortunate experience with a self-described witch who claimed to practice hoodoo who fought for the author and claimed there was such a tradition...because the author said so. It is so because the author says it so, right? Of course I disagree with that idiotic view.

The "bad" of the book, other than what I touched on above, is the grammatical errors and unfortunate editing. Some of the spells are repeated in the book. Most of the recipes are taken from online sources or from books and then have seemingly been tweaked and presented as if they were a cherished secret handed down through he family. The spells are also simplistic and when the reader gets to the section on the Psalms, and if the reader is like me, they will be left with the impression that the author has no clue how to use the Psalms in work. Some of the Psalms recommend for various situations have nothing to do with those situations. I believe these errors stem from the fact that the author engages in writing on topics she herself has little experience with. In effect, she is writing to fill pages.

The "good" of the book is that it is a decent introduction. If this is the first book the reader reads on the subject of New Orleans Voodoo or even Hoodoo then I'm sure they will like the content. However, if the reader has been around the block a few times then they will likely find little to nothing redeeming in the book.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest, I give this book a 3. I would not recommend spending money on this book. If you must read it then I would recommend checking your local library to see if they have a copy.

La Prenda

La Prenda, a.k.a. Nganga, El Caldero, is an iron cauldron that is filled with various items such as sacred dirts, herbs, sticks, blood, insects, and animal and human remains. The prenda serves as a sacred house or dwelling of a spirit as well as functions as an altar in the religion of Palo, or Las Reglas de Congo. For an image of a prenda, click HERE.

The creation of a prenda is a secret known only to the Palo priesthood; however, according to the book, Spells & Magic by the Diagram Group (p. 158), the following is an alleged ritual by which the prenda is created. I would caution readers from taking the following information too seriously as it is far more likely that this information is incorrect or only partially correct.

"1.) The mayombero and his assistant sprinkle rum in the shape of a cross on the grave of a criminal or someone who was insane, then remove the head, toes, fingers, ribs and tibias of the buried corpse.

2.) In his home, the mayombero is covered with a sheet and his assistant lights four tapers around him. A knife is placed at his side heaped with seven amounts of gunpowder.

3.) The mayombero goes into a trance, hoping the spirit of the defiled corpse will take over his body. If this happens, the gunpowder ignites.

4.) If the possessing spirit agrees, it's name is written on a piece of paper and this placed in the bottom of a cauldron with some coins, some grains of soil from it's grave site, and blood dripping from the mayombero, cut from his arm using a white-handled knife.

5.) Wax, a cigar butt, ashes, lime and a piece of bamboo are placed into the cauldron. The bamboo contains sand, seawater, and quicksilver and is sealed at both ends.

6.) To the cauldron are added ants, bats, bark, a centipede, chili, cinnamon, frogs, garlic, lizards, onions, red pepper, rue, Spanish fly, termites, worms, the body of a small black dog, a tarantula, a wasp, and a scorpion. If the nganga is to be used for good spells as well as bad, a little holy water is added.

7.) The cauldron is buried in the cemetery for three successive Fridays. After 42 days the cauldron is taken home and rum, pepper, dry wine, Caribbean cologne, and fresh blood are added. The cauldron is now ready for use."

'Ancient Aliens' = The Most Retarded Show On T.V.

I've held my opinions for years but it's time for me to speak my mind. I'm also encouraged by Brian Switek's recent blog on his opinions of the show, which you can read HERE.

Ancient Aliens gives the UFO community an even worse reputation than it has. The show is filled with pseudo-scientific nonsense. Anything under the sun is labeled as originating with "Ancient Astronauts". I swear if I hear that phrase, "According to Ancient Astronaut Theorists....", one more time I will pull my hair out.

I also think people should ponder why more serious shows on the subject of UFOs quickly get cancelled while garbage like Ancient Aliens gets multiple seasons.

I also think people need to ponder why certain big names in the UFO field who have decent reputations go on this show. Why would anyone who cares about their reputation have anything to do with this tripe? Is it just for the money?

'The Secret Circle' Gets The Axe

The CW has officially cancelled the show, 'The Secret Circle'. The show, which featured a group of teens who discover that they are witches, started out extremely slow and boring. The writers did not achieve the balance between "real life" problems and supernatural ones. Things improved drastically in the last 4-5 episodes and I had high hopes that the show would be renewed. Alas, this was not to be. Shame. Buffy the Vampire Slayer had two very boring seasons before it came into it's own and I was hoping that The Secret Circle would also be given that chance. R.I.P. I was recently contacted by a person named Jennifer who believes that she is part werewolf, part hell hound. These are her words below.

"Three years ago, I met a werewolf down in my woods while going for a walk. His name was Connor. He told me that I wasn't human, that I would become like him in my own time. I didn't believe him, but later that year, a week after my birthday in September, I starting feeling a change coming over me. The shift was extremely painful and I don't remember anything after it. Shortly after my first shift, I came across Connor again in my woods and told him of what happened. He told me that he knew, and that the reason I didn't remember my shift was because I was something mixed in with the wolf...It wasn't until Connor invited his friend, Damon (a werewolf/shadow wolf/wiccen mixture), that I found out that that other half was that of a hell hound. Since then I've only shifted once more, and both Connor and Damon feel that I won't shift again because of the amount of hell hound blood in my system."

" I haven't shifted since that second shift, but the moon brings my blood to a near boil. I am not stronger, faster, or more powerful than any other human being. Damon says that's due to my werewolf side. As far as hell hound side...I have more aggression, prone to more violence quicker, and have a bloodlust (almost like a vampire). I have met another werehound, but he lives far away, and we've only conversed over e-mail. He doesn't know much about being a werehound, because he was bitten, and there's nothing that I can find online about it, so it's a learning experience for me."
