The term 'charmer' is a synonym for an enchanter, a magician, or a practitioner of magic, more specifically folk magic geared toward the problems of everyday life, such as healings and dealing with aches and pains, providing relief for everyday problems, finding lost items, etc., but also included the ability to assert supernatural control over animals and even the weather. Though charmers practiced folk magic most would deny accusations of witchcraft and certainly would not use the label of witch to refer to themselves, being that most charmers were devout Christians. Today the term charmer has come to mean a sweet-talker, a smooth or suave individual who is good at manipulating people with their speech and flattery so that they can get what they want or assert power or control over people.
