The Hoodoo Truth: The 2005 Movie, The Skeleton Key

I'm sure most people have seen The Skeleton Key by now. Most people should also know that Catherine Yronwode of Lucky Mojo consulted for the film and that most of the candles, spiritual products, and other items in the movie come from her shop.

I saw the movie in the theatres when it first came out. I enjoyed the film. One of the reasons why I liked it was because I could not figure out the ending. I'm usually good at that. Anyway, when it comes to hoodoo/rootwork/conjure, please don't confuse what is shown in this movie as being what the practice is in reality. The writers/creators were not going for historical reality. Instead, they blurred hoodoo with voodoo and threw in just about every spooky element they could find. The practice of hoodoo portrayed in the film is more akin to the non-practicing white person's concept of voodoo and witchcraft than to actual hoodoo/rootwork/conjure as practiced by real-life workers.
