Today is the Winter Solstice, the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere. Tonight is the shortest day, longest night, of the year. From this day onward daylight will steadily increase until we reach the Summer Solstice. The ancient peoples viewed the Winter Solstice as the "rebirth of the sun".

Today is also the Wiccan and Neopagan festival celebrating the "rebirth of the sun", called Yule.
