De Masticatione Mortuorum

De masticatione Mortuorum, "The Chewing Dead", is the Latin version of the Germanic Nachzehrer.

Like the Germanic counterpart, the 'chewing dead' are believed to spread disease and to drain the life force of victims by consuming their grave shrouds, nearby buried corpses, and their own bodies.

In 1679, Philip Rohr wrote a famous book of the same name, documenting the widespread belief in this form of vampire.
