On tonight's episode the new Wiccan waitress performs a ritual and makes a tea to give to Arlene to drink in order to cause a miscarriage. Interestingly enough, such tea actually exists.
Back in the mid 90s I met and befriended a Wiccan woman and I used to hang out at her house. She taught me a lot and told me a lot of stories. My friend was also a licensed midwife and one of the stories she told me was that she knew a recipe for a tea that will cause a miscarriage, a natural form of an abortion. Unfortunately, the tea is extremely dangerous. The levels of herbs needed to create a miscarriage border on a lethal dose and so the tea is not recommended. This said, she claims she knew women who chose to make the tea for themselves and that it worked.
I guess you can see how odd I felt about tonight's episode knowing that such a concoction does indeed exist.
Needless to say, this was one of the reasons why the Church targeted herbalists and midwives of the past witch hunts because they knew the herbs that could both cure and kill, help a baby be born strong and healthy or help a woman abort a baby she did not want to keep.
Also, for anyone is interested, here is a link to my blog entry on Fairies, to learn more about the "fairies as aliens" with regard to Sookie.
