Lechuza

Lechuza are either shape-shifting witches or spirits in Hispanic folklore. Tales of Lechuza are quite popular in Mexico and Texas.

Appearance: A human-sized bird with a woman's face

Lore: Lechuza are women who have sold their souls to the devil in exchange for magical powers. At night, they transform into monsters with a bird's body and a woman's face, similar to depictions of harpies in Greek mythology. They then fly through the night in search of prey.

When a Lechuza finds her target she will perch in a location where she can't easily be seen and then will make either strange whistles or the sound of an infant crying. Anyone who attempts to determine where the sound is coming from is at risk of becoming Lechuza's dinner. Lechuza will then swoop down and carry off the confused and horrified individual.

In some versions of the story, the Lechuza is the spirit of a witch who was murdered by locals. Her spirit returns in the form of the bird-monster to get revenge. In other tales, the Lechuza is the vengeful spirit of a woman who has returned from the grave to torment the living and to seek revenge.

In modern times, most reported run-ins with the witch-bird involve her swooping down at cars driving deserted roads at night.

Powers: As a witch, Lechuza possesses supernatural powers. One of the powers of the Lechuza is to summon storms. Sightings of Lechuza are believed to coincide with thunderstorms. Lechuza possess the power to shape-shift into bird-monsters at night. Lechuza also possess the ability to disguise their voices to appear as if it is the cries of an infant in order to draw it's human prey closer. Finally, it is believed that hearing the cry of the Lechuza is an omen that someone in the household will die, a trait more commonly found in tales of the banshee. Lechuza are immune to weapons and bullets and possibly are immortal.

Defense Against Lechuza: Lechuza fear salt. Upon hearing the call of a Lechuza one should immediately began cussing her out. Doing so will drive her away. Don't go outside to investigate hearing a strange whistle sound or the sound of a baby crying.

Lechuza As Owls: Today many mistake owls for the Lechuza and some even suggest that owls are the origin of the Lechuza myths.

My husband said when he was single and lived with his parents, he would come home late at night from work and could here one whistling at him in the trees and follow him outside as he moved around the house inside. He said he would ignore it, eventually it went away....my best friends grandmother told us that her first born child died because of a lechuza...it howled all night during a storm by her baby's window, in the morning the baby had died....

These past few nights I've heard a large bird like creature in my parents back yard, it only happens at night, but last night we were all outside and we heard it fly but the wing spans was larger than an Eagle... And the screeching my Dad hears he describes it as a cry or low growl... It's kinda scary but never actually saw the animal or creature... Friends and family claim it may be the Lechuza but im still unsure.... If it is I really hope she goes away...

Just right now I was outside looking for signal on my phone and from a palm tree a big owl comes and swoops down at me screaming it sounded like a lady. If I wouldn't have gotten down I think it would've attacked me or something. Is this normal ???

I wasn't always a believer in things like this, but events over the past couple of months have changed my mind completely. It all began when I moved with my grandmother to a small town in south Texas. She had told me stories of Lechuza sightings, but I of course didn't believe in that kind of thing. My first night there, there was a big storm so I woke up in the middle of the night because of all the noise. I looked out the window and saw a shadow of a really big owl looking bird, except it couldn't be an owl because of how big it was. I convinced myself that I was just seeing things and went back to sleep. I didn't say anything about it the next morning, and tried my best to get it out of my mind. After about a week I completely forgot about it until I was up late working on some homework and the 'bird' appeared outside my window again, only this time I saw its eyes. Those were not the eyes of an animal. They were something much more sinister. im writing this now scared for my life because each night this thing gets closer and closer to me. THIS IS NOT A JOKE LECHUZAS ARE REAL BEWARE!!!!
